Captain
Cook Pig (Sus scrofa)
Pigs vary greatly in size and colour and are found in a variety of habitats
including forest, riverlands and grasslands. Pigs are omnivorous, feeding
on braken roots, berries, fruits, worms and animal carcasses.
Tuatara
(Sphenodon punctatus)
The Maori word, "tuatara" means 'peaks on the back' and refers
to the triangle skin folds along the back of the male tuatara. The tuatara
is one of the oldest living, and slowest growing of all reptiles. They feed
on a number of insects including crickets, beetles, wetas and moths.
New
Zealand Fur Seal (Arctocephalus forsteri)
The NZ Fur Seal frequents the southern coastlines of the South Island. The
males reach about 1.8m in length and weigh up to 140kg. The females are
slightly shorter and lighter. The Fur Seal's food consists of octopus, small
fishes and squid.
