Little Owl (Athene noctua)
Feeds mainly on mice, insects & earthworms. Found in open country and forest edges, mainly in the South Island.

Rook (Corvus frugilegus)
The rook is all black with bluish gloss and a large black bill. They feed on worms, insects, larvae, seeds and vegetable matter. They are found mainly in Hawkes Bay, South Wairarapa and Canterbury.


Blackbird (Turdus merula)
The Blackbird is very common throughout New Zealand. They feed mainly on ground, worms and often fruit. The male blackbird is glossy black, with the femal a dark brown.

Magpie (Gymnorhina tibicen hypoleuca)
The magpie is found throughout NZ, commonly on outskirts of built up areas, including parks & golf courses.. They feed on insects, worms, occassionally eggs and the young of ground nesting birds.

South Island Robin (Petroica australis)
The robin is fully protected, with strinkingly long legs. It is very tame & inquistive. Found in both native and exotic forest, and feeds on insects and small worms.

Tui (Prosthemadera novaesslandiae)
The tui is fully protected, and slightly bigger than the Blackbird. It has a white tuft on its throat and a white patch on its wing. It lives throughout NZ up to aroun 3500 fett. It needs on nectar, fruits, berries and insects.

Pied Stilt (Himantopus himantopus)
The Pied Stilt has long spindly pink legs, and a long straight bill. They are common throughout NZ anywhere there is water. They feed on aquatic insects, worms, snails and shellfish.

Turkey
A common feast on the Christmas dinner table, this bird was at its full glory recently at the Nelson A & P show.
